Norman Augustine
"Leadership in a dot-com World"
Macklin Business Institute Distinguished Lecture
Series
Norman Augustine, one of the most highly regarded corporate
executives in the nation, addressed the College and business community
on Monday, April 3, 2000 at 9:30 a.m. in the Theatre Arts Building on the
Rockville Campus.
Mr. Augustine is currently chairman of the executive committee of Lockheed
Martin. As chairman and CEO of the corporation until his retirement in
1997, He engineered some of the most successful acquisitions in recent
corporate history. Under his leadership, Lockheed Martin emerged as one
of the top two defense and aerospace firms in the world.
After retiring from active employment at Lockheed Martin, Mr. Augustine
became a professor of engineering at Princeton University, serving until
July 1999. He has had a distinguished record of public service, working
for both Republican and Democratic presidents in his two tours of duty
at the highest levels of the Pentagon.
Mr. Augustine is in his eighth year as chairman and principal officer
of the American Red Cross, and has served as president of the Boy Scouts
of America. He has also served on the board of directors of many prestigious
institutions. In addition to his professional accomplishments, honorary
doctorates, and volunteer activities, Augustine has literally gone to the
ends of the earth in his time off.
He has dog-sledded through the Arctic, explored volcanoes in the Antarctic,
backpacked in the Canadian Rockies, traveled the Oregon Trail in a covered
wagon, hot-air ballooned in Africa, and boated up the Amazon.
Norman Augustine has authored, co-authored, and contributed to many
books on leadership and management. His most recent work is the critically
acclaimed Shakespeare in Charge: The Bard’s Guide to Leading and Succeeding
on the Business Stage, which he co-wrote with former U.N. Ambassador, Ken
Adelman.
His address, Leadership in a dot.com World, will explore the many facets
of leadership in the 21st century. According to Norman Augustine, “Leadership
cannot be taught, but it can be learned.” He will offer up a wealth of
real-life stories and witty, insightful commentary on an array of leadership
issues that go beyond the balance sheet.
Mr. Augustine is at his best with students. He believes that at the
student stage of life, it is important to understand that “leadership emerges
out of experience…from meeting challenges…from failing and trying again.
As a result, the stuff of leadership often turns up in unlikely places,
in people where one might least expect it…as when a leader arises at a
time of enormous challenge and difficulty and need.”
Norman Augustine is an outstanding model of how a leader should act
in today’s business environment.
This lecture was broadcast on MC cable Channel 51 and is available on video tape loan from the MBI.
