Montgomery College has established a Center for Entrepreneurship under the auspices of the Gordon and Marilyn Macklin Business Institute.  The Macklin Business Institute was created at the College through a generous gift from the Macklins to provide three types of programs: honors undergraduate educational opportunities, faculty professional development opportunities, and specialized programs for the business community.  The Center for Entrepreneurship meets the third expectation.

The Center for Entrepreneurship will focus its activities in two areas,

  • Continuing Education and
  • Business Development Services.
  •                 In Continuing Education, the Macklin Institute will collaborate with our Continuing Education division to offer a variety of noncredit courses geared to business interests.  In that regard we are looking at a self-supporting opportunity to create coursework in areas of specific interest to both new entrepreneurs in the midst of developing their business plans, as well as advanced offerings to the growing business community in the county.  These non-credit courses have the typical 2-4 week cycle and can be offered repeatedly throughout the academic year.

To provide business development services to the business community, the workforce and county economic development efforts, the Macklin Institute would develop coursework, counseling, conferences, and symposia in such areas of interest as:

  •  Small business planning and creation.
  •  Venture capital.
  •  State-of-the-art resource support for growing companies.
  •  Acquisitions & mergers – pros and cons.
  •  Executive level training & support for CEOs and their teams.
  •                 In addition, the Center for Entrepreneurship can assist in seeking and developing grant support to provide focused services for special populations such as women business owners and the Hispanic business community, as well as for development of an entrepreneurial database and general entrepreneurship development.

Jerry Feigen, most recently, Executive Director of the Venture Capital Institute, and an internationally known and highly regarded consultant specializing in new enterprise development and venture capital activities, has been engaged to direct the Center.  Mr. Feigen has spent nearly 40 years in venture capital and business development activities.  He is eager to associate with the College and, under the auspices of the MBI, offer services to regional businesses.
